PERIOD

Period is a non profit organization focused on ending period poverty. In the US, up to 500 million menstruators struggle with period poverty every month due to the incredibly high cost of products. In addition to an already high cost, many states have the "tampon tax," a 6-7% sales tax on period products that categorizes them as "luxury items." But menstrual hygiene is NOT a luxury: it's a human right. Menstrual hygiene is too often stigmatized, too often labelled a "gross" or "unspeakable" topic. All people who menstruate deserve to feel clean and comfortable, regardless or their ability to pay for products.

In the MICDS chapter of period, we focus on service, advocacy, and education to promote menstrual equity and destigmatize menstrual hygiene. Already, Period @ MICDS has been taking major actions to help menstruators in our community. This summer, we hosted a drive to make period packs for menstruators in need through the St. Louis Alliance for Period Supplies. We've also drafted a petition to "Ax the Tampon Tax" in Missouri. But there's still much more work to be done in the fight for menstrual equity.

A Message from the MICDS Members

"Our goal at Period is to make sure every woman, regardless of her financial standing, has access to the period products. However, in almost every state, these products are taxed as a 'luxury' item. We want to change that. As stated by the United Nations, menstruation is not merely a women's issue: it's a human rights issue."
