Doorstep Donations

MICDS Chapter

Doorstep Donations is a fully student-led 501(c)(3) organization started by a group of high schoolers in New York in spring 2020 during the beginning stages of Covid-19 to combat food insecurity by bridging the gap between food pantries and people who wanted to donate food, but were afraid or unable to leave their homes during Covid-19.

How does it work?

1. Families volunteer to participate in the program. Each time a participating family goes grocery shopping, they buy one or two extra items and place them in the reusable bag provided by Doorstep Donations, filling up the bag in about two months.

2. Every two months on a set day, each family leaves the filled bag outside their front door for student volunteer drivers to pick up the items and deliver them to the food pantry. The result is a constant stream of donations to food pantries!

Our donations go to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. Many MICDS students have volunteered there on their own or in small groups, and it is located very close to school - just 2 miles north of MICDS off of Warson Rd.

How can you get involved?

1. Sign up to be a student driver to pick up donations from participating MICDS families' front porches once every two months.

2. Volunteer at the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry the day our donations are delivered to help sort the items.

3. Sign up your family to be a donor family!

What is the impact of Doorstep Donations?

Since its inception, Doorstep Donations has expanded to over 16 locations in North America, serving over 40,000 meals. According to their website, if a chapter were to have 50 donor families, the Bag Program could collect more than 2.5 tons of food per year for the local food pantry.
