MICDS Girls Cross Country Volunteers for Girls on the Run 5K

This past weekend, the MICDS Girls Cross Country team decided to celebrate their first State Champion title in the school's history by volunteering at the Downtown Girls on the Run 5k. As many know, it is very difficult to get teenagers out of bed in the morning, but these girls triumphantly made their way downtown to support Girls on the Run on a chilly Saturday morning. This race consisted of over 5,000 people, and the cross country team was eager to cheer on the fellow runners. As thousands crossed the finish line, the cross country girls handed out medals, water, and snacks to support the athletes. As many of them know, running 5,000 meters is quite difficult, so they understood the importance of cheering on the fellow runners and their own younger MICDS GOTR team members.

Quote from Student Organizer, Estephanie Estrada:

"MICDS girls support girls on the run because as a XC team, we need to inspire those younger than us to continue running strong and fighting through the pain to cross that finish line. When you’re a young girl, finishing a race is much more than just running it, it’s the result of months of hard work. We want to be there and support them and show them that they should be proud to run like a girl" - Estephanie Estrada '21

GOTR Impact

Girls on the Run is a an organization which "reaches girls at a critical stage, strengthening their confidence at a time when society begins to tell them they can’t. Underscoring the important connection between physical and emotional health, our program addresses the whole girl when she needs it the most" (GOTR). Teams of girls train for several weeks in preparation for various races throughout the year in order to run in the GOTR races.

At an age when girls are constantly trying to measure up to ideas of who they should be or how they should act, Girls on the Run leads them to understand that their potential isn’t just enormous — it’s beyond measure.
