After two years of COVID restrictions putting a halt on large gatherings and community service opportunities, the Turkey Train was brought back at MICDS during the 2021 school year.
The Turkey Train community service project is a fun and engaging way for the community to come together and help contribute to the lives of people in need by donating turkeys and other canned goods to the St. Louis Area Foodbank. Canned goods were collected in bins throughout the entire school from November 8 to 15th, and the turkeys were collected on the 15th.
The Turkey “Train” itself is a tradition where Upper School students line up in a line from the Upper School STEM Building to the MAC. Turkeys are passed down the line one by one until they reach the MAC, counted, and loaded onto the St. Louis Foodbank’s Truck.
This year marks the 18th Annual Turkey Train at MICDS. Despite challenges in finding turkeys due to supply chain issues, we totaled 5,719 lbs of non-perishable items and 333 turkeys weighing 4,562 lbs this year. Our community also donated $575 through the virtual drive and checks. Our total donations will provide around 10,693 meals to those in need.
After braving freezing cold weather and passing hundreds of turkeys, students were able to enjoy hot chocolate outside and chat with peers. As always, the Turkey Train helped remind us to be thankful for what we have and to reconnect with people we haven’t talked to in a while. This year marks another successful Turkey Train and many more to go. Thank you to all who helped support this annual tradition!
