Sustainable Futures Club Makes Eco-Friendly Letters for Delmar Garden Patients

Kareena Kanumury ‘23 helps both the environment and nursing home patients with her eco-friendly service project for her club, Sustainable Futures

ATTENTION! To those looking for community service hours, this opportunity ends on November 19th (11/19/2020).

Sustainable Futures Makes Eco-Friendly Letters from Scratch!

Sustainable Futures is leading a community service project that encourages any and all MICDS students to create their own paper from scratch, using recyclable paper from home. Kareena Kanumury ‘23, head of Sustainable Futures, claims that “although we… recycle and enforce recycling to a lot of people, [many] are still unaware what to recycle and what not to recycle, so the contaminants that people put into like recycling facilities… if there's one contaminant, all of those paper materials and all of those recyclable materials have to go to landfills, right? And [then] they’re all contaminated. So, if we can recycle at home, we can save a lot more paper, and we can spread more awareness and be more eco-friendly” (Kanumury ‘23).

Killing two birds with one stone, these environmentally-friendly pieces of paper will be used as supportive letters to patients at Delmar Gardens, a nursing home. During COVID-19, many elderly patients are unable to visit their families or even go out; now more than ever, we must “[spread] support… and our sense of community” to those going through tough times (Kanumury ‘23).

Looking for Volunteers!

There’s no limit to what we can do for our community! Remember, even one letter can make someone’s entire year. This service project offers a spectacular opportunity for those looking to gain community service hours as well; simply contact the sponsor, Mrs. Galluppi (cgalluppi@micds.org) for more information on hours. This opportunity runs until November 19th (11/19/2020), but feel free to make letters on your own time as well!

What’s Next?

This service project is only the beginning; other opportunities to support the community are up and coming. In fact, “after this project… [Sustainable Futures wants] to do Clean Up St. Louis, but maybe once COVID subsides… Other things [they] wanted to do would be more podcasts or articles” to bring more awareness to the MICDS community of environmental matters (Kanumury ‘23). We can’t wait to see what else is to come!
