Volunteering During COVID-19

Usually when we think about volunteering, we picture going to an organization and working closely with other people, maybe playing with or tutoring young children, helping the elderly in a retirement community, or volunteering in a hospital. But does that have to always be the case? Not at all!

There are many ways we can be a tremendous help to others, all while staying at home or maintain social distancing.

Here are some ways you can show kindness and compassion from home:

  • Sew cotton masks for healthcare and community service providers. There are lots of easy instructions online, and here is information on how to drop off at two local locations: Missouri Baptist and Easterseals Midwest, an organization that works with people with developmental disabilites. Check with hospitals and organizations near you - there is a tremenous need of cotton masks as additional protection for people who are continuing to serve people in our community.

  • Sew cotton hair coverings and caps for healthcare workers.  Here are patterns and more information from Missouri Baptist.

  • Call, text, or leave a note on elderly neighbors' doors to check in on them. Ask if there is anything they need. And if you happen to have what they need, leave it on their doorstep to avoid contact.

  • Donate food to a local food pantry or the St. Louis Area Foodbank. Call your local food panty to check their hours and ask what food items are most needed. The St. Louis Area Foodbank information is here.

  • Express gratitude to people working on the front lines: healthcare workers, grocery clerks, mail carriers, delivery services, restaurant workers, etc. Write and send a note of thanks now, or think of ways to show your gratitude later once things open up again.
