Halloween Costume Drive
In the last few weeks of October, MICDS hosted a Halloween Costume Drive on campus. Students and faculty/staff were encouraged to donate gently used costumes to be provided for incoming Afghan refugee families along with the efforts of the Welcome Neighbor organization. The drive was set up in May Hall for members of the MICDS community.
The drive stood as a fun and engaging way to involve students in the greater St. Louis needs. Students were able to learn about Welcome Neighbor, a non-profit organization that is currently helping integrate Afghan refugee families into a community. As they begin to become involved in American cultures and traditions, Welcome Neighbor has taken the initiative to raise money and collect costumes to introduce the Halloween festivities!
About Welcome Neighbor
Launched in fall of 2016, Welcome Neighbor in St. Louis, Missouri has grown into a wider organization with over 3,000 supporters. Currently, 300 families from 11 different countries are being helped! Along with hosting refugee families, the organization offers to teach English, provide driving lessons, and arrange a vast variety of events and activities to involve families into the community.
The mission of Welcome Neighbor is “to partner with refugee and immigrant families, connecting them with the people and opportunities that will empower them to build and live their best life in their new country” as well as “foster a community where refugees and immigrants are respected and flourish as our friends and neighbors.”
