Peer Tutoring vs. Peer-to-Peer: Yes, They’re Different!

Sanchi Vishwakarma ‘23, co-head of Peer Tutoring and Peer-to-Peer, is here with us today to discuss the similarities and differences. Hopefully you leave this article feeling motivated to give either service club (or both) a try!

PEER TUTORING:

To start, peer tutoring is an institution where “students help other students academically” (Vishwakarma). The time commitment is incredibly need-based, meaning that you can volunteer as little or as much as your tutee requires. Looking in the future, Peer Tutoring has begun to establish a student & teacher partnership this year--sort of like a teacher’s assistant--where you can go around and help a class of peers during review sessions. Based on your comfort level, you can tutor a subject of your choice to your classmate(s) through volunteering, which may even help you understand the material better. If you are interested, please contact either Sanchi Vishwakarma (svishwakarma@micds.org) or Caroline Cooper (ccooper@micds.org).

PEER-TO-PEER:

Peer-to-peer, on the other hand, although often confused for Peer Tutoring, is much different. Rather than teaching academic content, Peer-to-Peer is more of a “partnership with Middle School on life with Upper School” (Vishwakarma). Through this organization, Upper School students may volunteer to teach healthy vs. unhealthy relationships to Middle Schoolers, as well as how to build good relationships with peers and tutors and maintain self-respect. As Peer Tutoring is finally back in person, the club cannot wait to see what new activities are ahead! Time-commitment-wise, there will be about six conversations with each grade throughout the year, taking place during the H block of H days. In addition, there will be around 3 preparation sessions with each grade. If this interests you, please contact vthurman@micds.org.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

In all, be sure to know that Peer Tutoring teaches classmates our age how to approach academic problems. On the other hand, Peer-to-Peer is mostly built upon Upper Schoolers teaching Middle Schoolers social, learning skills that will help them as they grow in MICDS. Hopefully this helped!
